Redondo Beach can't ban day laborers

The Supreme Court denies a petition to overturn a lower court decision that prohibits any ban on day laborers gathering and soliciting jobs. Case goes back to 2004 and was in response to a sting operation. Local immigrant groups are thrilled. (LA Weekly) Today's action by the high court comes as day labor groups meet in L.A. to take stock on the progress they've made over the past two decades. From the LAT:

The conference comes as the national immigration and labor debate has become polarized, with tough crackdowns in Arizona, Alabama and other states, and heated rhetoric in the Republican presidential primary campaign. And in ways that activists couldn't have imagined when they began organizing street corners, the day laborers who gathered this week are prepared to fight back on a national scale.
