From the September poll by the Public Policy Institute of California:

Both independents and moderates are evenly split on the recall.

A higher percentage of Republicans are for (86%) than Democrats are against (65%), providing virtually all of the margin to recall Davis. Davis' support among Democrats and independents has grown substantially since August.

In the poll, 53% of likely voters would favor recall, 42% say no. In August it was 58-36, so the race tightens. The L.A. Times Poll earlier this month had found an even tighter contest, 50-47 for the recall.

Regional support for recall is highest in Southern California outside Los Angeles. That's also where Schwarzenegger is strongest.

As undecided voters choose sides, Bustamante and McClintock have picked up the most support. Bustamante and Schwarzenegger are basically tied, 28% to 26%, with McClintock at 14%.

Moderates are evenly split between Arnold (25%) and Cruz (24%).

Proposition 54 support has plunged to 38% since the August poll.

The survey is more than a week old. The poll is here (PDF file). Links to six news stories are at the top of Rough and Tumble.
