Magazines

Telling magazine tales

Cathy Seipp uses her CityBeat column this week to peruse the first issue of Distinction magazine and other L.A. glossies in search of some inner meaning. I don't think she found any, but she includes some good recent history on local magazines -- including that Distinction editor Laurie Pike once started Glue, a hip Silver Lake/Los Feliz magazine. Seipp also recalls her own days writing at the late Buzz.

It’s thanks to Buzz, in fact, that I developed the habit of quickly scanning the room at parties for people who hate me.

Distinction is the free lifestyle book that is supposed to go only to the highest income homes in L.A. and Orange counties, but doesn't. Seipp asks: But honestly, can’t a magazine whose title evokes a dance-hall floozy theme song have a little sass?
