Anschutz makes media move

L.A.'s reclusive billionaire Phil Anschutz, who is almost never interviewed, is buying a newspaper: the San Francisco Examiner. Here he owns Staples Center, a bunch of downtown property and the Kings, and has his fingers in Hollywood with production companies and theater chains. He's based in Denver and so private that the smiling mug shot at Romenesko is just about the only photo that ever illustrates stories about him. Examiner story.

The Denver Business Journal story says Anschutz plans to publish "a quality newspaper, with an emphasis on balanced reporting, heavy on business and sports and stories about the Bay Area's neighborhoods." In getting the paper that used to be the flagship of the Hearst empire, Anschutz also acquires the annual Bay to Breakers race -- which he has competed in for many years.
