Toluca Yard goes historic *

TextThe soccer field and subway tunnel mouth at 2nd Street and Glendale Boulevard near downtown received city designation as a historic-cultural monument, clearing the way for a new housing development to be built (instead of a graffiti park). The Toluca Yard serviced the Pacific Electric Red Cars that traveled between downtown and Hollywood using the city's first subway tunnel, beneath Bunker Hill. The last car rode down the tunnel in the 1950s.

* Correction: My mistake. Actually it's only the tunnel mouth and a nearby substation building that were given status. The larger Toluca Yard acreage was denied HCM status. Also: WalkinginLA.com has some revealing two-year-old pictures of the yard and substation here.

Previously: Toluca subway tunnel
