Asking the tough questions *

Hilary SwankMadeleine Brand did a good scene piece this morning on Day to Day about how soft the backstage press is with the Oscar winners. Transcripts of the Q-A with best actress winner Hilary Swank show just how cozy the relationship has become. First off, the reporters and columnists applaud when the star is brought in. Then the grilling begins. Her answers don't matter; but just for fun, here are the first bunch of questions:

Q. Hi, Hilary. I'm from South Africa.

Q. Hi, Hilary. Congratulations.

Q. Can you say a few words about the collaborative creative process with the crew, particularly in your case, the makeup artist who did such a great job.

Q. Congratulations. Ted from E TV.

Q. You have really upped the ante for women who have won Oscars for playing hookers and loose women. Have you been offered those roles in the past, and what is your opinion of breaking that tradition?

Q. Hi, Hilary. I would like to talk to you -- I know you're a girl from Washington and Nebraska and lots of different places. Do you think that New York City has toughenned you up a little bit, and how you have picked Gleason's as your training there?

Q. Hi, Hilary. My question kind of goes around that line. What lessons did you learn from women boxers, and how have you applied that to your acting career?

Q. Hi, Hilary. I'm Charlie. Yeah, I was really inspired by your acceptance speech and you've told us where you've come from and what you do now. What has inspired you the most in your journey?

Q. Hi, Hilary. Over here in the middle behind the cameraman. Congratulations. I just wanted to say you have joined the ranks of Marlon Brando, Wallace Beery and Robert De Niro as far as...as far as portraying boxers on film, yet you've tread new ground being the first female boxer to win an award. Do you think of yourself as a trailblazer?

Q. Hilary, congratulations. It is so wonderful....Of course, the impressions come from the film and how gorgeous you look tonight. I love the glamorous aspect of this, but at the same time you think about the art and all you've been through, and a thousand people are going to ask you about this dress and this will be photographed for ever and ever. Is it fun?

The last question was apparently from Jeanne Wolf and made it into the "Day to Day" report. (* And: French journalist Emmanuelle Richard blogged from backstage.
