The San Bernardino Freeway is closed in both directions in Alhambra while a SWAT team negotiates with a kidnapping suspect. A robot just brought the suspect in the white van a phone line so the two sides can communicate without worrying about batteries dying. The chase began with an attempted kidnapping in the Lake Sherwood area of eastern Ventura County.

* Smoked him out: A little after 3 p.m. the SWAT team punched a smoke or flash grenade through a rear window, then a police dog dragged the suspect out of the van.
