First thing Friday

Some links and things to know for getaway day...

Miller •  The Daily News proclaims its own staff artist, Gregg Miller, the "best-dressed guy in the San Fernando Valley." That's him to the right.
•  Q-and-A with the new Getty director: "Absolutely it’s a bully pulpit."
•  Orlov analyzes the mayor's role in the drive to bring the NFL back to Los Angeles. [Oops. Link corrected.]
•  Summer vacation comes a day early for the City Council.
•  Doug Dowie, the former head of Fleishman-Hillard in L.A., wants his polygraph test to be admitted as evidence in his upcoming trial.
•  The balcony is closed: Tarzana's Mann Valley West theaters have closed down, and Franklin Avenue reports that the first Beverly Hills cinema—which I posted about last year—may have an Aug. 22 demolition date.
•  Debate of sorts in the 14th council district race.
•  Flattery by imitation? Sports By Brooks says ESPN is now using hotties to lure sports fans to its website.
•  Research partly funded by Gawker Media and the company behind Movable Type found the most visited L.A.-based blogs to be Defamer, BoingBoing, Little Green Footballs and Sports by Brooks.

And finally...

•  Steve Soboroff bought the 1946 cast-iron Remington Rand typewriter used by the late sports columnist Jim Murray and is sending it on a national tour of sports venues. First stop: Del Mar race track on Saturday.
