We never did get a satisfactory explanation for the unsavory odor that wafted over a wide swath of L.A. last week. But now they are complaining about a similar thing in Washington, D.C. The Post (and the Washington Times) say the smell there has been worst in schools and police stations in the Northeast section. City officials there blame some combination of sewer lines and storm drains, but they haven't found a source. Here, it was less of a sewage smell than essence of wet mattress and soured milk, according to those who emailed about it.

* San Jose too: It smells like ammonia and rotten eggs there. 2:40 pm
