August Wilson dies at 60

TextPlaywright August Wilson lost his fight against liver cancer on Sunday in Seattle. A little over a month ago, he began talking to the media about his terminal illness and assured his fans that he was ready to go. At the time, his play "Radio Golf" had just opened here at the Mark Taper Forum. Since closed, it was the last in a ten-play cycle about life in the African American section of Pittsburgh where he grew up. "Radio Golf" director Kenny Leon, told AP: "We've lost a great writer, I think the greatest writer that our generation has seen, and I've lost a dear, dear friend and collaborator." Broadway's Virginia Theater will be renamed the August Wilson Theater on Oct. 17. NYT obit, LAT obit.
