The good guy in Robert S. Levinson's new mystery, Where the Lies Begin, is an elected member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Nicknamed Duke, he used to be chief of the LAPD and is tapped to help catch a terrorist fugitive who was his best friend in childhood. Duke also plays the hero by shooting the would-be assassin of a fading Hollywood legend. Did I mention it's fiction? First chapter preview.
