Crisis in the Palisades

This week's Palisadian Post leads with the news that Mort's Deli might be for sale. The owner isn't talking, but plenty of others are. Former mayor Richard Riordan is said to be interested in saving the Swarthmore Avenue deli by adding it to his restaurant empire—the Original Pantry downtown being the other outpost in the empire. Another potential buyer told the Post "residents like me who have lived here a long time want to keep Mort's and the village like it is with a small-town feel. One thing we know for sure is that we want Mort's to always be here, as it has been for us and our children." Resident Steven Soboroff, himself a former candidate for mayor, tells the paper, "Mort's isn't just any deli. It's a Palisades institution."
