The television academy's new selection system had an effect. TNT's mini-series "Into the West" received sixteen Emmy nominations, followed by Jack Bauer and "24" with twelve and "Grey's Anatomy" with eleven. Last year's biggest finalists "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" were shut out, and a number of nods went to shows that have been cancelled. Variety's Josef Adalian and Michael Schneider are struck by how the list is "filled with shows and actors that have been around forever -- and, in many cases, won't be around at all come fall." Tom O'Neil at The Envelope says "Desperate Housewives" has itself to blame: "Why, oh, why did they submit the season opener to the judging panel instead of the season finale, which was 30 minutes longer and one of the most brilliant episodes of the whole past TV year?" Full list.
