Marineland to vanish, 19 years later

BrochureDemolition of the final remnants of Marineland of the Pacific gets started today on the Palos Verdes peninsula. The Daily Breeze reports that about 20 crumbling buildings will be dismantled "largely by hand because of the asbestos in the 1950s-era structures." Marineland operated from 1954 to 1987. The last evidence of the park to go are the old motel, restaurant and the Catalina Room, "home to hundreds if not thousands of weddings over the years." The aquariums where Corky, Orky and Bubbles the pilot whale used to perform are long gone, as well as the 244-foot Sky Tower. The site is being developed into the $320 million Terranea resort.
