Demolition in San Pedro

creditThey are going to blow up San Pedro's first high-rise this weekend. About 6 am on Sunday, wind conditions allowing, the stripped-down former Logicon building at 55 W. Fifth St. will be brought down with a series of strategically placed charges. The Daily Breeze says it will be the first implosion conducted in the city of Los Angeles in twelve years. There won't be a lot of dust since the innards had to be cleared due to asbestos, and it won't even be very loud. People living in San Pedro may "hear a loud boom, followed by the sound of cracking metal, followed by a rumble," Port of L.A. port executive director Geraldine Knatz said at this week's harbor commission meeting. "Don't call the police." Once the site is cleared, a sixteen-story condominium tower will be built.
