Yen Do, Vietnamese newspaper publisher was 65

The Nguoi Viet Daily News in Orange County is the largest Vietnamese daily newspaper in the nation. Do started the paper in his Garden Grove garage as a four-page weekly in 1978. It grew into a major community voice, especially in Orange county's Little Saigon. He died Thursday from complications of diabetes and kidney disease. From Jeff Brody in the Register:

Throughout his long career, which began as a student activist and reporter in Vietnam, he became known for his widespread generosity, intellectual prowess, and courageous leadership of the Vietnamese refugee community.

In his role as a pioneering journalist, he chronicled the history of the Vietnamese in the United States and assisted in their acculturation by using his newspaper to aid in their adjustment.

As editor and publisher of Nguoi Viet, Do immersed himself in community activities and helped established Little Saigon as the business, cultural and political capital of the refugees outside Vietnam. Nguoi Viet, which means “Vietnamese people,” circulates in communities across the United States as well as in Europe.

Obits also in the L.A. Times and in Vietnamese at Nguoi Viet.
