Wash your hands
Revealing piece in the New York Times Magazine about how difficult it was to get physicians at Cedars-Sinai to disinfect their hands. Finally, they cultured the docs' hands and put the gory results on a screensaver on all the hospital computers. That worked.
Baquet turns 50
The New York Observer covers the newsroom celebration for Dean Baquet's birthday and talks to ex-editor John Carroll about the speculation that Baquet and publisher Jeff Johnson might depart. “If Dean and Jeff left,” Carroll said, “it could raise the question of whether there’s going to have to be a new editor and publisher annually at the L.A. Times.” Carroll says that he and Baquet speak about three times a week.
Chandler mansion burns
The San Marino home where the Times-owning Chandler family lived for several decades caught fire and was heavily damaged. The vacant home is so big it took firefighters a while to even locate the flames.

The restaurant guide announces its annual survey for L.A. this morning at the Peninsula. The top 5: Matsuhisa, Mélisse, Sushi Nozawa, Leila's, Saddle Peak Lodge.
Mayor Sam adds a filter
Apparently there is a level below which Michael Higby does not want anonymous commenters to sink at Mayor Sam's Sister City. He has begun to moderate comments — and isn't happy about it.
