George Foulsham, the managing editor who resigned from the Santa Barbara News-Press over the dictates of owner Wendy McCaw, was announced this afternoon as assistant managing editor for presentation at the Daily News. He's a former news editor at the Times. Here's the newsroom memo from editor Ron Kaye:

I am very pleased to announce that George Foulsham, former managing editor of the Santa Barbara News-Press and AME at the Ventura Star, has been named assistant managing editor for presentation. George joined the Daily News staff a couple of weeks ago as a page designer while he (and we) sorted everything out. This is a very exciting appointment. With his experience and skill, George will help us execute the ideas we got recently from the design consultant, participate in developing new products and improving old ones and generally help us get out the paper. Please welcome him and put him to work helping you make the Daily News a better paper day by day.

Jerry Roberts, who quit as News-Press editor-in-chief, will be in the Valley to speak at a Society for Professional Journalists dinner at the Smoke House in Burbank on Oct. 4. The count of editors, reporters and photographers who have left since McCaw and her boyfriend decided to play newspaper has grown to more than 20.

Incidentally Daily News columnist Dennis McCarthy had a piece today on a waitress who has worked the floor at the Smoke House for 44 years. Imagine the garlic bread smell in her clothes.
