As I thought in today's Morning Buzz, the Z File is a new column label in the LA Weekly for David Zahniser. Also new in today's issue is L.A. Sniper, slightly gossipy, slightly snarky short items off the news by Alan Mittelstaedt. He reacts to some City Hall stuff and says Mel Gibson should ask Sheriff Lee Baca to back off the pressure on the actor's arresting deputy, James Mee. Some advice for the Times:

L.A. Times’ editors showed uncanny insight naming the psychoanalysis of their paper — the assigning of three of the paper’s investigative journalists to report on how Spring Street can connect better with its readers — after one of Edward Teller’s projects. But instead of the geographically misguided Manhattan Project, we recommend a name inspired by Teller’s 1983 meeting with President Reagan: The Strategic Defense Initiative — or, Star Wars on Spring Street.

Plus: Two allusions to Jim Hahn in one column.

As newspapers and television pull back from investigative reporting, foundations and other organizations are beginning to fill the void. One of the most interesting is Accountable California, a project of Local 721 of the Service Employees International Union.
