Fire in Malibu *

Wrap: Four homes and a guest house destroyed, four other structures damaged. Full containment by 8 pm. The blog Code 6 Charles monitored the scanners and pros checked the fire's progress in a thread at LACountyFire.com.

Update (7:27 pm): Channel 4 went to national news at 7 pm, Channel 7 just switched over to "Wheel of Fortune," and Channel 2 is filling. No spread in quite a while, and things seem to be calming down. Veronique de Turenne has photos shot from Point Dume up at Here in Malibu.

Update (5:57 pm): Cautious optimism that hand crews might get a circle around the burning homes and contain the spread. The fire broke out at 5 pm on Pacific Coast Highway at Malibu Canyon Road. The county put 300 firefighters on the scene pretty quick. Ten structures have burned.

Wildly out of control. Structures Homes burning on the beach and along Old Malibu Road. Live on 2, 4 and 7.

Just this morning, Veronique observed that the Santa Anas have been blowing for 36 hours. County Fire Capt. Mike Brown is on Channel 2 saying gusts are hitting 60 miles an hour.

Channel 2 copter pilot (5:47 pm:) "Just no good news here." Fire is spreading west along the beach, which is to say up the coast.
