Los Angeles for May

CoverInside the annual weekend getaway issue is a piece from low-achieving Jordan High School in Watts, where Jesse Katz spent five months with the academic decathlon team. Editor Kit Rachlis' note says Katz's "portrait of the school’s best and brightest and their coach, a goofy but sharp-tongued teacher named Jim Moore, as they attempt the impossible will break your heart. It’ll make you angry, too." Also in the magazine are an excerpt from the upcoming oral history of Warren Zevon and Steve Erickson’s review of Hoax. All I have in this month is a short pointer to the annual placing of the Memorial Day flags at Los Angeles National Cemetery, but LA Biz Observed editor Mark Lacter has a piece on the rise and fall of former KB Home CEO Bruce Karatz.

In the morning's email: Portfolio is flacking former Los Angeles staffer Amy Wallace's online Screed-o-Matic infographic, letting you play Marty Singer for a few minutes.
