McTiernan gets jail

Die Hard director John McTiernan was ordered to serve four months for lying to the FBI in the Anthony Pellicano probe. McTiernan tried to withdraw his guilty plea but was rebuffed. He must surrender by Jan. 15 and also pay a $100,000 fine, but his attorneys plan to appeal. LAT, AP

Dodgers beat reporters catch up

The Times' reporters who follow the Dodgers every day didn't report on the team's clubhouse rift until it was broken by others, and today Kevin Baxter and Dylan Hernandez describe seeing signs before — but don't explain why they missed the story. Mayor defends $1.5 million Tennie Pierce settlement

"We had two recent trials that cost the city more than $10 million," Villaraigosa said Monday. "I felt it was in the best interests of the city to settle this now for a reduced amount. I also believe we have shown that the city will vigorously fight on these cases and not be an easy mark." DN


Are video billboards a traffic hazard?

The Federal Highway Administration plans a $240,000 study to find out. "It's OK to have people look away from the roads once in a while, but there's a question about how long they should be looking away," said Doug Hecox, a spokesman. DN

The U.S. Postal Service will honor the former L.A. Times columnist and KMEX news director who was killed by a sheriff's tear gas projectile while covering a riot in East Los Angeles on Aug. 29, 1970. LAT

PBS won ten, CBS won half that. LAT


MacArthur Award winners

Two Caltech researchers, biologist Michael Elowitz and computer scientist Paul Rothemund, and a UC Riverside biologist who studies spider silk are among this year's winners. Choreographer Shen Wei, whose company has performed at Disney Hall and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and playwright Lynn Nottage, whose play "Intimate Apparel" was at the Taper, also were honored with grants.
