La Fonda returning to Wilshire

La FondaDowntown blogger Angelenic has the scoop (and some nice photos): Wilshire Boulevard institution La Fonda will reopen on Valentine's Day. The new version won't appeal to Japanese tourists or homesick Mexicanos looking for a family birthday spot. The new owners are fixing up the place and a chef is redoing the menu as higher-end Mexican cuisine. But nobody went to La Fonda for the food — what about the mariachi? The Nati Cano players that ruled at Wilshire and Carondelet for decades won't be there, but there will be dinner performances by Mariachi Monumental de America, says Angelenic.
