OlsonTalk about corrections. Months after finalizing Sara Jane Olson's prison release date, five days after letting her out — but two days after police groups started squawking — the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation suddenly decided it erred and put her back in jail for another year. After pondering all day Saturday how they would explain it, the agency's chief deputy secretary of adult operations finally said they failed to count the bank robbery part of the plea bargain Olson accepted.

Another open question in the case has also been solved: the LAT settled on calling her Olson after going with Kathleen Soliah, her former name, in the first days of the story. An LA Observed reader who kept score on the back and forth emails:

On Saturday (March 22) the LAT online story identified Kathleen Soliah in the first paragraph about the re-incarceration, and made all references – except for a note about the legal name change – to the person in question as Soliah. This morning (March 23), the Page 1 print story refers to her as Sara Jane Olson in first reference and as Olson throughout, except for one note about being formerly known as Soliah. Seems to me that people couldn’t make up their mind somewhere in the editing chain.

He sends along the physical evidence, after the jump.

As newspapers and television pull back from investigative reporting, foundations and other organizations are beginning to fill the void. One of the most interesting is Accountable California, a project of Local 721 of the Service Employees International Union.
