LAFD firefighter killed, another hurt near LAX *

An underground explosion around 2 pm blew off manhole covers on Sepulveda Boulevard near La Tijera. Both streets were closed briefly for air ambulance operations. A gas leak or electrical vault explosion are suspected.

* Update: Later in the afternoon, Mayor Villaraigosa said one of the firefighters had died. The other was in the hospital. No details yet on the LAFD news blog, just the breaking news alert. KFWB, KNBC
