Santa Monica Freeway still closed *

Crash photo
A wrong-way head-on in the eastbound lanes near National Boulevard about 5 a.m. killed two drivers and still has the area gummed up. The freeway's eastbound lanes and the connectors from the 405 may reopen about 1 p.m. The 405 and surface streets around the freeway junction are jammed, as you'd expect. One of the dead was a Culver City police detective. The CHP incident log describes something close to chaos, with frustrated drivers exiting using on ramps all the way back to Centinela and Cloverfield. CHP Sigalert log, wires

* 12:40 update: CHP says lanes have opened. Sigalert cancelled.

Noted: KFWB radio reporter Pete Demetriou saw the speeding wrong-way driver moments before the crash. Also, one of the reasons the freeway remained closed so long apparently is the special handling due to the involvement of a police officer. First responders on the scene saluted the remains of the Culver City detective who died, per the photo from ABC 7.
