2 shot at Valley synagogue *

Police are investigating this morning's shooting at Adat Yeshurun Valley Sephardic synagogue on Sylvan Street in North Hollywood as a hate crime. Two Jewish men were shot inside the synagogue about 6:20, by a man who approached and opened fire, police said. The victims are in stable condition at a hospital. The LAPD has alerted other synagogues around Los Angeles about the shooting, and police have stepped up patrols at Jewish religious institutions, the Times says. The paper says the victims were shot in the lower torso, other reports say in the legs. Police are reportedly looking for a black man in the shooting, and detained a man nearby, but his connection is uncertain. LAT, AP, CBS 2

* Revised details from LAPD: The shootings occurred in the underground garage, when a man "wearing a black hoodie" didn't say anything and shot the first arriving worshiper in the leg, then shot another man. The gunman then fled without taking anything. LAT
