Steve Lopez crosses one toke over the line *

Los Angeles Times columnist and author Steve Lopez makes his crossover debut this week as a new contributor on KCET's SoCal Connected. His first report is a video version of his recent Times column searching out some medical marijuana. If anything, I have to say, it's an even better, and funnier, story with video. Here's the show's teaser — the segment produced by Rick Wilkinson airs Thursday at 8 p.m.

The path from Times ink-stained wretch to public television was pre-trod for Lopez. Many years ago, Metro reporter Patt Morrison started moonlighting as a co-host of KCET's predecessor to "SoCal Connected." She got a book show and now has her own daily news talk program on KPCC, while still writing a weekly column and blog items for the paper's opinion pages.

* Further noted: How could I forget that first came "City Watchers," a popular KCET show that was hosted by Times film critic Charles Champlin and Metro columnist Art Seidenbaum. Also, L.A. Week in Review was hosted for awhile by retired editor Nick Williams.
