  • District teachers, not charter schools or other outside groups, were given control of most of the 30 LAUSD schools included in a reform effort. LAT, DN
  • Gov. Schwarzenegger has named longtime friend and former adviser Bonnie Reiss to the vacant post of state education secretary. Capitol Alert
  • The City Council wants the DWP to share data it collects on household dogs so the city can take in more revenue by forcing pets to be licensed. LAT
  • Ex-Speaker Fabian Nuñez filed papers or a committee to raise money for a run for state treasurer in 2014, but it may be just a place to stash some cash. LAT
  • A firm has been hired to assess whether the office renovation sought by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, but dropped under pressure, is needed. DN
  • Mayor Villaraigosa is in Washington to pitch the feds for a bridge loan to cover construction of the subway extension into the Westside. KPCC
  • Profanity from the mouth of an 11-year-old girl in the trailer for the upcoming "Kick-Ass" is, according to Brooks Barnes, "igniting debate about how Hollywood advertises its R-rated films on the Web." NYT
  • James Rainey pronounces NYT Jerusalem bureau chief Ethan Bronner's work as fair, even with his son in the Israel Defense Forces. LAT
  • Terry O'Day, executive director of Environment Now, was appointed to the Santa Monica City Council to fill the vacancy created when Ken Genser died. LAT
  • Bad weather and fish shortages related to El Niño probably explain the recent rash of distressed pelicans, the state Department of Fish and Game says. LAT
  • KCRW's Edward Goldman reports from the Los angeles exhibitions at ARCO Madrid on Art Talk.
  • "Top Secret: The Battle for the Pentagon Papers," a play by Geoff Cowan of USC's Center on Communication Leadership & Policy, will be opening Off-Broadway in New York.
