Gates draws a crowd

gates-casket.jpgThe family of the late LAPD chief Daryl Gates received several hundred visitors on Monday after his casket was placed on display in the auditorium at the police headquarters on 1st Street. The funeral is Tuesday morning, with street closures and bus re-routings planned. A procession escorting Gates' body is expected to move from the police building to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels at about 8:30 a.m. The funeral service itself will be private, although KNBC will provide pool video afterward. A public honors ceremony will follow in the cathedral plaza.

Street closures: Temple Street between Broadway and Grand Avenue, Hill Street between Temple and Ord streets and all of Hill Place: 6:30 a.m. to noon. 1st Street between Main and Hill streets, Broadway between 2nd and Judge John Aiso streets will be briefly closed between 8 and 9 a.m. for the procession from the police building to the cathedral.
