Sunset Blvd. bridge, 1957

The Sunset Boulevard bridge over the 405 freeway in Brentwood is being torn down, piece by piece, for replacement. When it was completed in 1956, the road was still being called the Sepulveda Freeway. Zev Yaroslavsky's website has that story and more photos.

405 logoThe repair work, as you may have heard, is being accomplished at night by a giant concrete-eating machine swaddled in what are essentially blankets to muffle the sound. This phase of dismantling work is scheduled to take six nights and involves freeway closurses, but by now travelers on the 405 below Sepulveda Pass might be getting used to night closures.
