Friday developments in Westlake shooting

Last weekend's fatal shooting of 37-year-old Guatemalan Manuel Jamines continues to echo in the news.

  • LAPD officer Frank Hernandez, who shot Jamines, was accused in a civil lawsuit earlier this year of shooting a 19-year-old man in the Rampart district in 2008 and lying about him pointing a gun at the officer. The suit is pending in federal court. LA Times
  • The LAPD is banning news vans from parking on 6th St. near Union Avenue tonight and Saturday, in hopes of avoiding the crowds that have gathered this week. LA Weekly

  • Some community activists criticized Mayor Villaraigosa for defending the officers who confronted Jamines before an investigation is completed. LA Weekly
