Third night of street protests in Westlake area

Police and a few hundred protesters squared off again Wednesday night in the area of 6th Street and Union Avenue, with some objects thrown and rubbish fires lit. Police fired non-lethal projectiles and at least four suspects were arrested. Earlier in the evening, Chief Beck was greeted by jeers at a community meeting where he had gone to promise a full investigation into the shooting of Guatemalan day laborer Manuel Jamines, 37, who police said threatened officers with a knife. Frank Hernandez, the 13-year LAPD veteran who shot and killed Manuel Jamines, has been involved in two previous on-duty shootings, the L.A. Times reported. Beck declined to discuss details, but defended Hernandez. Also, check out photographer Jonathan Alcorn's gallery from Tuesday night, including the photo shown here.
