Runyon Canyon mystery mansion now on the national radar

solar-drive-graphic-nyt.jpgThe mysterious mansion high atop Runyon Canyon that has never been officially occupied — just squatted in by partiers and gang members — has caught the attention of New York Times bureau chief Adam Nagourney. Sitting on 22 acres, perhaps the biggest acreage left in the Hollywood Hills, the house is eye level with the Hollywood sign and has some good views. It also is the subject of a bunch of urban legends about sightings and hauntings, as he describes, and just went on the market for about $15 million. "For all its aspirations at grandeur, the 16-year-old house at 2450 Solar Drive remains unfinished and vacant, pocked by boarded-up windows and gang graffiti, a jumble of hanging wires and holes cut in the living room ceiling," the story says. "A Winnebago is parked in the gated front yard."

Curbed LA editor Dakota Smith, who posted a long entry on the place on Jan. 28 with the backstory that it appears the NYT used, said the property actually went on the market back in mid-January.
