Dodgers rookie gets a hit his first try

jerry-sands-first-game.jpgJerry Sands, the outfield prospect the Dodgers called up hoping he can add a little spark to the lineup, stroked a double to right field in his first time up in the major leagues. Sands started in left and batted seventh against veteran Atlanta pitcher Tim Hudson. He later drove in his first run with a sacrifice fly to right, then struck out twice. The Dodgers won 4-2.

Reality check: Sands may be the Dodgers' most promising power-hitting prospect, but it's all relative. He wasn't ranked among the game's top 100 prospects going into the season at either Baseball Prospectus or Baseball America.
