Infant killed at Downtown Art Walk *

bdt-child-killed.jpgA two-month-old boy and his mother were struck by a sheared-off parking meter at 4th and Spring streets at the peak of tonight's Art Walk. There are conflicting media reports whether the baby has survived. Blogdowntown says the meter was knocked flying by a car that accelerated onto the curb while the driver was parking. That's normally a very crowded section of sidewalk during Art Walk.

* 11:30 p.m. update: Eric Richardson of Blogdowntown has confirmed with police that the child died of his injuries. The LAPD's chief of detectives for Downtown, Paul Vernon, was on the scene and tweeted earlier to "say a prayer" for the child. The driver was not cited.

* 11:50 update: Dennis Romero at the LA Weekly says police now believe the car that jumped the curb hit the mother and baby.
