'The Descendants' music coming to South Bay

descendants-soundtrack.jpgThe Southern California Slack Key Festival on Sunday at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center will feature some of the top Hawaiian musicians whose work made it into Alexander Payne's film "The Descendants." Gabby Pahinui, the late patriarch of the slack key genre who has five songs on the film's sound track CD, is represented by his headliner son, Cyril Pahinui. Jeff Peterson, a guitarist who also plays on the soundtrack, is on the bill too, along with Sonny and Lorna Lim. Full roster

Under guest artists, the picture of a young girl caught my eye. What's she doing there? Turns out Kalyn Aolani is a California teenager with the falsetto chops to appear on stage in Hawaii with Cyril Pahinui. (I changed up the video to her cover of Aunty Genoa Keawe's Alika. Patsy Cline of the islands? Holy smokes.)
