Street closures coming for Levitated Mass boulder

levitated-mass-move-zevweb.jpgLACMA's giant hunk of Riverside County rock reached South Street near Palo Verde Avenue in Lakewood at about 4:30 this morning. After taking the day off, the operation is scheduled to resume moving at about 10 p.m. and lay over Wednesday on Atlantic Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets in the Bixby Knolls section of Long Beach. Tomorrow night's route will be west on Pacific Coast Highway from Magnolia Avenue in Long Beach, then north on Avalon Boulevard to the Carson city limit and a Thursday layover on Vermont Avenue just north of Carson Street.

The plan is for the Levitated Mass convoy to enter Los Angeles on Thursday night — in hopes of reaching the museum on Saturday morning.

The rolling boulder will pass into the LA city limits Thursday night headed north on Vermont Avenue, then go west on 190th Street, north on Normandie Avenue, west on Artesia Boulevard, north on Western Avenue, east on Florence Avenue and north on Figueroa Street. It will stop for the day on Friday on Figueroa between 63rd and 65th streets.

Then on Friday night, the schedule calls for the rock to complete the last leg of the 105-mile journey: north on Figueroa Street, west on Adams Boulevard, north on Western Avenue, west on Wilshire Boulevard to Fairfax, then right and around the block to Sixth Street to reach the site of the Levitated Mass exhibit on the north lawn of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
