Work on 405 getting intense again (for drivers)

Thumbnail image for I-405-logo-color.jpgStarting this weekend, the nighttime shutdowns of the 405 freeway became another level more intrusive for drivers trying to get over Sepulveda Pass. Complete closure (in one direction -- see below) from midnight to 5 p.m. to allow temporary supports to be installed under the Mulholland Bridge, the locus of all that concern over Carmageddon last summer.

And as of Monday night, one direction or another of Wilshire Boulevard is subject to complete closure over the next week, starting each night at 8 p.m.

On the freeway:

The first overnight closures will affect the northbound freeway, and will take place on Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3.

Then the same stretch will be closed in the southbound direction on the nights of Monday and Tuesday, March 5 and 6.

The work is expected to conclude with another two-night southbound closure, again on the stretch running from the 101 to Getty Center Drive, on Monday and Tuesday, March 12 and 13.

Regarding Wilshire, Metro says eastbound lanes will close Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights. Westbound will close Wednesday and Friday nights. Metro's recommended detour advice doesn't make a lot of sense. It tells drivers on Wilshire to take Sepulveda to Santa Monica Boulevard then go west to San Vicente Blvd. If only that were possible.
