Video: Checking in on Libros Schmibros

Journalist Steve Saldivar has posted a nice video story on David Kipen and his Boyle Heights lending library and pay-what-you-can used bookshop, newly relocated in a storefront at Mariachi Plaza on 1st Street. libros-schmibros-mariachi-grab.jpg Kipen is approaching two years now as an Eastside book purveyor at Libros Schmibros, after many years as a book critic and director of literary programs for the National Endowment for the Arts. Kipen, also an author, wrote the foreword for the re-issue of the WPA guide book to Los Angeles that I was so enthused about last year at this time.

On one day in 2006, Kipen sent LA Observed a series of on-the-road dispatches as he drove from the Bay Area to LA, stopping at bookstores to promote his new book at the time. His day ended at Book Soup in West Hollywood.
