More sad notes to last week's Hollywood crash

saida-mendez-girls-laop.jpgSaida Méndez Bernardino, the 27-year-old mother who was killed with her daughters Hilda, 6, and Stephanie, 4, when their car was struck head-on on Highland Avenue at Willoughby last week, left behind a third daughter. Araceli is 12, according to reports in Spanish language media and on Elena Popp's Facebook page. The girl had been dropped off at school just before last Thursday's crash. Hilario Cruz, the girls' father, survives as well.

Popp, a tenants' lawyer and activist in the MacArthur Park area, posted that she employs Mendez Bernardino's mother. Nine nights of memorial services are being held mostly at Popp's home; she says she will post updates on ways to help the family.

Zaida Méndez was from Santa Cruz Papalutla in Oaxaca, and according to La Opinion Oaxacan community organizations are trying to raise money for the family.
