Plumber saves girl from jumping off freeway bridge

Jay Schaefer, a father of four daughters, saw a bicycle parked on the Whitsett Avenue overpass above the Hollywood Freeway. Then he spotted the 16-year-old girl perched on the ledge above the freeway. He stopped his truck, jumped out, and grabbed her through the fence rails. "I asked her if she was OK. She said, No, she wanted to die," Schaefer told the Daily News. "Then I said, Let me help you, I'll do anything to help you."

More hands reached through the rails to keep the girl from jumping. Eventually she was brought back from the edge and taken to a hospital

"This man is by every definition of the word a hero," LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey said of Schaefer. "And we don't use that term lightly."
