Dodgers move into first place

Well, what do you know. The Dodgers have climbed back from the depths of last place and tonight lead the National League West, after beating Toronto 14-5. It's the most runs the Dodgers have scored this season. They won without the injured Matt Kemp in the lineup, and with Yasiel Puig still rapidly cooling (he had one single in five trips as his average continues to drop), but A.J. Ellis had five runs batted in, the most of his career. Skip Schumaker added his first homer of the season. The Dodgers now lead Arizona by half a game and are four games over .500 for the first time all year.

Since his sizzling career start in June, Puig is hitting a pedestrian .254 with no power to speak of (he last hit even a double on July 5) and only a smattering of walks to keep him getting on base. The narrative of his season has yet to be written. He could get hot again, or he could lose his spot in the line-up as the Dodgers pennant race gets serious, or he could just be what most rookies are: a work in progress with modest expectations who has a lot to learn.
