Trayvon Martin protest spills onto Santa Monica Freeway

sm-freeway-protest-71413.jpgMarchers upset over the not guilty verdict in the Florida trial of George Zimmerman entered the 10 freeway at Crenshaw Boulevard this evening and briefly blocked traffic in both directions. Photos and video showed demonstrators milling on the freeway, the LA Times reported, and officials said that portions were closed from 6:20 p.m. to 6:44 p.m. Police and the CHP cleared the freeway of protesters but drivers were still advised to be cautious. The LAPD called a citywide tactical alert bracing for more activity tonight. On the streets, police fired non-lethal beanbag rounds at protesters who began throwing objects near Washington Boulevard and 10th Avenue in Mid-City. There has been one arrest made, the Times says. A number of peaceful protests were being held today around the city.

Last night, KNX reporter Claudia Peschiutta was struck by a beanbag round while covering a protest on Crenshaw. She was left with a nasty bruise.
