New sheriff in town goes on media tour

After about a month on the job, new Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell was on NBC 4 News Conference with Conan Nolan on Sunday, dropped in at KPCC today to be on "AirTalk" with Larry Mantle, and was featured over the weekend in a Daily News behind-the-scenes package by photographer John McCoy and reporter David Montero.

On "AirTalk," McDonnell said his reception in the department has been great — he's the first outsider elected sheriff in a long time — but that some reorganization is likely after he's been around a bit longer. He also said he would like to end the practice of new sheriff's deputies working in the jails for as long as seven years before they go on to field assignments around the county. It hurts recruitment, McDonnell said. He also favors replacing the Men's Central Jail in downtown. The segment runs 23 minutes.

In the Daily News, McDonnell allows photographer McCoy access to campaign events, a private sit-down with interim sheriff John Scott at Hof's Hut in Long Beach, his hotel room on election night and meetings with campaign manager Becca Doten. "This has been one of the most rewarding assignments of my career," McCoy posted on Facebook. "Thanks Mike Anastasi for helping me pitch the idea to Jim McDonnell." Anastasi is the editor in chief for the Los Angeles News Group. Photo gallery

Noted: Becca Doten, the former City Hall aide who ran McDonnell's campaign, has taken a job as Assistant Deputy State Controller in the Los Angeles office of new Controller Betty Yee.
