The parent of City National Bank, the largest bank headquartered in Los Angeles, has agreed to be purchased by Royal Bank of Canada for $5.4 billion, the firms announced Thursday. LAT

The National Trust for Historic Preservation will announce today it has added the Southwest Museum to its list of 55 "national treasures" and will begin leading efforts to save the institution. LAT

The controversial process for hiring firefighters at the Los Angeles Fire Department needs another overhaul, according to a new Rand Corp. report released Thursday. LAT

Deputy Mayor Doane Liu, 52, was appointed to a new position as deputy executive director and chief of staff at the Port of Los Angeles. He will report to executive director Gene Seroka. Daily Breeze

Outside the Beltway, some Democratic power players and donors are coalescing behind the goal of electing California's first Latino senator, and they have their candidate in mind: former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. National Journal
