L.A. Observed, version 1.3

Bit of a new look around here, prompted by the email gift a few days ago of a donated logo. To the talented graphic designer who took pity on this ragged-looking site, you know who you are -- and thanks! I'll keep tinkering with the stylesheet, so if anyone has requests or a suggestion shoot me an email. Yes, I know there's a whole universe out there of cool effects and scripts, but the goal here is to keep this site simple and quick to load. If you're using a way outdated browser -- like those antique versions of Netscape on all the PCs at the L.A. Times -- there's not much I can do to help. Demand an upgrade. But this look should hang together better on the old machines.
