LA media parties

The L.A. Press Club is doing another no-host cocktail gathering on Monday, Sept. 29 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the poolside bar of the W Hotel in Westwood. It's to fete Virginia Postrel, the former Reason editor now living in Dallas who is on tour for her new book, The Substance of Style: How the Rise of Aesthetic Style is Remaking Commerce, Culture and Consciousness."

PEN USA is having its annual literary awards dinner in Los Angeles on Oct. 20 at the Biltmore. This one costs a bit more: $85 for members, $125 and up for non-members. Among the awardees are Kevin Starr, Danny Goldberg, Gordon Davidson, Charlies and Donald Kaufman and Sonia Nazario.

Meanwhile, photos from the most recent mediabistro party in Los Angeles are now online. See L.A. Times deputy managing editor Leo Wolinsky, Variety.com editor Travis Smith, Luke Ford and MovieCityNews columnist Tiffany A. Stone, she of the demonic eyes (see the last photo), all in the same room together.

Mediabistro apparently didn't see fit to invite me (sob!). After they took all those photos of me last time around too.

I just hope they invited Eric Almendral. It isn't a party without him.

Note to Joe Shea: the best way to appear in photos from the Virginia Postrel party is to actually show up at the party. If, however, you'd rather not, please send a photo of yourself at home during the hours the party takes place, and I'm sure LA Press Club will be happy to put it up on their Web site, with a suitable caption: "'Real journalist' Joe Shea at home investigating the contents of his refrigerator while all the fake journalists were being photographed at Virginia Postrel's book party."

Some people try in earnest to be funny and are not. Alkon is a case in point.
