Canter's goes Vegas

Venerable Canter's Deli on Fairfax took over an existing deli at Treasure Island in May and is getting set to open a big new showcase in the Strip casino, and possibly others at the MGM Grand and Bellagio. Owner Gary Canter tells Andy Fixmer in the L.A. Business Journal that Canter's slots may not be far behind.

"A jackpot could be three matzo balls or three knishes."

Prices are 10% higher in the Las Vegas deli, and the cole slaw has been spiked with horseradish. Says Canter: "See, you can’t do that here. (They) would kill you if you make it spicy.”

Have they imported any of the waitresses from the Fairfax location, the ones who always call me "dear" (as in "Don't you want some soup with that, dear?")?

Actually, I haven't been to Canter's for years (more than a few, anyway). It was always a late-night choice, and I'm just not out late as much as I used to be (not nearly as much, in fact).

Yeah, but Vegas and Canter's -- I think it will work.

Don't you want some soup with that, dear?

Real Jews do not go to Canter's because it is not kosher. It's fine for goyim though.

One question: Isn't Luke Ford a converted Jew? If so, what the hell does he know about "real Jews?"

Mack, I Am The Arbiter Of All Things Jewish. Converts are always more zealous.

Just don't ever order the Danny Thomas special at Canter's. I did once in the '70s and still remember that leaden sensation in the pit of my stomach. Is it even still on the menu I wonder? But I like Canter's; anything can happen there. Once I saw two guys get into a fistfight near the payphone...I think it was over who was more of a Real Jew.

I once ate at Cantors. I thought it was kosher. I ordered lasagna. I started eating it, then I asked the waitress if it was real meat. Yes. I almost gagged. Meat and cheese together. It's a shanda.

Let's make that our new lunch spot then! Just stay away from the lasagna, dear.

How about a nice God-fearing kosher restaurant in Pico-Robertson?
