Robert Tagorda at Priorities and Frivolities recycles this quote from former Reagan speech writer Peggy Noonan. Did she have certain bloggers in mind?
Beware the politically obsessed. They are often bright and interesting, but they have something missing in their natures; there is a hole, an empty place, and they use politics to fill it up. It leaves them somehow misshapen.
Flame her not me.
Flame her? I agree completely.
Everybody rants on politics, commentary is available everywhere, the NYT n/f bestsellers are half political--and yet for all the cant and rant, America couldn't possibly be dumbed down any further.
People need more civitas, gravitas, public art discussion, non-retail-oriented cultural options, Messaien, Mahler, Marsalis, and books inside their heads that last beyond a Publishers Weekly review halflife. In short, for enrichment, they need to reclaim their ability to think in a non-economic way; as our politics are mostly about economics, it's hopeless to turn much to the political for self-enrichment.

I think we have much more to fear from people who don't read the newspaper.
